“The age progression software we’ve got back at the office should get us some helpful images of Ridge to show people when we need to,” Jack said to Hayley the next morning shortly after they were seated for breakfast in the lodge’s dining room. “Plan for an online meeting sometime today so you can suggest whatever tweaks need to be made so the images look like Ridge as you saw him last night.”

Admittedly, there was a small voice in the back of Jack’s mind that told him Hayley could be mistaken about seeing the infamous fugitive. But due to her excellent reputation as a bounty hunter and the skills he’d already seen her put into action, he was more inclined to believe in her.

Katherine and Milo had once again made the trek back to Range River and the Eagle Rapids Bail Bonds office to work on the case. They would be there for a good part of the day, dealing with the age-progressed photo as well as making calls and looking through old files related to Ridge that were stored somewhere on one of the office computers.

“You’re assuming our happy-couple cover will get blown and we go back to being admitted bounty hunters?” Hayley asked. “And that’s when we’ll need photos to show people and maybe even post them or hand them out?”

“It’s bound to happen eventually,” Jack said. “But it won’t be because I can’t play the part of a loving husband.” He placed his hand atop hers on the table, enjoying the moment as she fixed a tough-girl scowl on her face while her cheeks turned pink.

Hayley looked at Jack’s hand lying loosely atop hers. She turned her hand over and gave his a gentle squeeze.

The emotion that passed through Jack was surprising. It felt like the acknowledgment of a growing connection between them that he didn’t dare talk about. Because giving voice to it would make it real. And he’d rather pretend it wasn’t happening. It was easier that way. He wouldn’t get hurt.

When she looked up at him, his heart just about fell out of his chest. The expression in her blue eyes was warm, but also questioning. She wanted to know what he was feeling and he was not about to say. So he just sat there, looking back at her, hoping his own cheeks hadn’t turned pink.

“Well, while your people are working on photos, I’ve got my Range River Bail Bonds office crew doing deep research on Ridge,” Hayley said after a moment of silence. Now there was a challenging sparkle in her eyes. “Before you know it, they’ll find out Ridge’s favorite sports, his shopping and eating habits, hobbies and any other personal information that has come to light in previous investigations. We will provide the important detail that leads to his capture.”

“With just Jonah and Lorraine working on it at your office?” Jack shook his head. “They’re young. They’ve got a lot to learn.”

“They’re smart and capable,” Hayley said, defending her team.
